The Difference Between Wet Cast And Dry Cast Paving Products

Understanding the Difference Between Wet Cast And Dry Cast Paving Products

At Style & Craft Paving, we believe informed clients make confident decisions. That’s why we’re happy to share how two of the most common paving products—wet cast and dry cast—are made, and how they differ.

Wet Cast Paving Products also commonly known as Simulated Stone

Refined finish. Decorative detail. Ideal for high-end spaces

What is it?

Wet cast products are made using a more runny concrete mix that’s poured into moulds. This allows for smoother surfaces and intricate textures, often mimicking the look of natural stone hence the name Simulated Stone.

Typical Uses:

Garden features, patios, pool surrounds, cobbles, coping stones, and edging where a premium, decorative finish is required.

How are these Wet Cast products manufactured

• Mould Preparation: Moulds are cleaned and treated with a release agent. So that the concrete does not stick to it when it hardens, same principal as greasing a baking tray.
• Mixing: A very runny concrete mix is prepared.
• Pouring & Vibrating: The mix is poured into moulds and vibrated to eliminate air bubbles.
• Initial Curing: The concrete is left to cure in the moulds, typically overnight.
• De-moulding: Once set, the product is carefully removed from the mould.
• Final Curing & Finishing: Products are left to cure further and may be sealed or textured for added strength and appeal.
• Because of the labour intensive process wet cast products are more expensive than conventional dry cast pavers

Dry Cast Paving Products

Strong. Consistent. Perfect for high-traffic areas

What is it?

Dry cast products use a semi-dry concrete mix that is packed and vibrated into moulds. It’s ideal for producing large volumes of paving blocks with high strength and consistency

Typical Uses:

Driveways, roads, commercial or industrial areas where durability and load-bearing capacity are essential.

Manufacturing Process:

• Mould Filling: A zero-slump (very dry) mix is packed into moulds.
• Compaction & Vibration: The mix is compacted and vibrated for maximum density and strength.
• Immediate De-moulding: Products can be removed from moulds almost immediately.
• Curing: Pavers are left to cure for several days to reach full strength.
• Quality Control: Each product is checked for dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Which Is Right for You?

• Wet Cast – Ideal for decorative applications where texture, colour, and finish matter most.
• Dry Cast – Best for functional spaces that need durability, strength, and fast installation.
